Gil Strommen's photography
I have been involved in photography since my parents gave me a Brownie when I was 8 years old. At university, I was one of the photographers for the year book, doing sports photography as well as candid photography. I was also part of the darkroom crew, and learned a lot about film and paper. I then became interested in black and white landscape photography after becoming acquainted with Ansel Adams and his work.
I had an exhibit in Carmel, California and haven’t looked back. I returned to London in 2002 and during the transit, all my negatives were stolen. It was a shock and I decided to redirect my work. I now mainly do what I like to call ‘cityscapes’. This is a term that I started to use about 4 years ago. At that time no-one understood what I meant, and now I see it used in articles all the time. Did I start something?
I have been experimenting with colour. This includes what I call 'Hyperreal'. This is high contrast, super saturated colours. This turn to colour came after I was asked to do a lot of work for hotels and also with the work on my new book, 'Thirasia - The Other Island' that is now available.
